Boca Da Valeria, Brazil

Today, after cruising 147 nautical miles from Santarem, we felt we were really in the Amazon jungle, as we visited a small Indian village on the banks of the Valeria River where it flows into the Amazon River. There were sturdy houses on stilts that put them above the flood line. Though some of the aspects of the visit seemed a little contrived, such as little children dressed up in feathers, there are, in fact, some 50 families that live in the tidy village. Tahleen tried to chat in "Portuņol" with some of the locals, as we sauntered along admiring the lush vegetation, and a pet toucan.
