This town was originally founded as a Fort to keep foreign companies out of the mid-Amazon. Rubber plantations used this port for shipping out rubber and other tropical items, such as special wood and food.

We motored in a bus to the jungle via a vivid red dirt road with some muddy risky spots in order to take a walking tour in the tropical jungle. Houses along the road were less than modern housing. In the jungle there were termite colonies attached to trees, Brazil nut trees, rubber trees, arachnids, and many other types of tropical plants and animals. Our guide cut open a Brazil nut pod and we all had a bite of the fresh nut meat.
